Ken Chan: Embracing Imperfections

Ken Chan is getting all the good roles. After making his on-screen debut when he was 18 years of age, He has bagged significant roles in some of the most challenging and risky drama series on Philippine TV. Ken Chan first drew the viewers' interest when he starred in the series Meant to Be as one of the love interests of Billie (Barbie Forteza). However, it wasn't until 2015 when he captured the critics' attention when he played a transgender person in the afternoon drama series Destiny Rose.

La Vendetta Series Review

I was in my early teenage years when we watched this Drama series. La Vendetta revolves around the chaotic life of the Cardinal Family, specifically Eloisa, Amanda, and Almira. One deprived of love, another suffering from mental trauma and low self-esteem, and the other met a tragic end. The conflict started when the soul of the deceased sister haunted the living to exact revenge on her murderer. As the story unfolds, it will also uncover people's vile nature, dirtiest secrets, and hidden desires. It is the first paranormal series on Philippine TV and is a game-changer back then. It led to the birth of a number of horror-themed Pinoy series such as Killer Bride.

La vendetta

The Verdict

La Vendetta's concept is ahead of its time. It came at a time when there was an onslaught of telefantasya on Philippine TV. It was a success despite the show's limited run. The story's strength comes from the unpredictable twists and turns that will leave its audience gaping in awe. You will often feel perplexed about the motivation of the murderer to kill Almira. Everyone was a suspect, and they each have a story to tell that is relatable. It is a gothic fiction that took advantage of the character's death, gloom, and fears. The plot is simple; it involves eight people in an eerie mansion engulfed in the Cardinal Family's messy life.

La vendetta

The show starred three of the biggest names on TV Jean Garcia, Sunshine Dizon, and Jennylyn Mercado. Nonetheless, this is a 'Jean Garcia' show. She was a scene-stealer. Compared to her other works where she was ruthless, Garcia was able to outshine everyone in this series by playing the role of a pitiful villain. There was a beautiful character development that did not feel forced. Eloisa's character here was multi-faceted, but the writer could've played with her character a bit more. There were instances when she was not authentic to the role. For example, when she was so determined in one scene, when in fact, her decisions can easily be influenced by the people around her. Her mannerism and nuances as a person suffering from trauma appeared like acting out a false role.

The supporting casts were equally magnificent, particularly Nana Mildred, JunJun, Joana, and Rhodora. Nana Mildred has perfected the art of providing support to the main character. I doubt if the series would be as effective as it was without her. Rhodora has maintained this mysterious, almost ghastly nature throughout the series. Almira has a limited appearance in the series, but you will feel chills running down your spines whenever she does.

Areas of Improvement

La vendetta

There are instances when you will feel that the series was jumping from one scene to another. Some actions and motivations are illogical. There was a scene when Ariel bribed the staff to make the people believe that he was dead, which in reality was impossible since there would have to be a medico-legal report about his death. I also hoped that the series would not have been too focused on finding the culprit since it felt strained. They could've investigated other crime incidents first that are related to Almira's death.

Nonetheless, the series was able to convey the essence of the story successfully. It is an exhilarating story of vengeance, deception, passion, and love. The time is ripe for GMA to make another series of the same genre.

Just a Quick Background!

You probably know by now that I came from Wanhua District. So, how on earth did I end up becoming a Pinoy TV fan when Taiwan’s entertainment industry is not too bad? Well, blame my nanny for that. Manang Emy (She said Manang means old lady) is a massive fan of ‘teleserye’ and Eat Bulaga. Back in 2000 (yes, I am turning 26), her relatives will frequently send her piles of recorded shows in VCD format. I remember being fascinated by the local culture of the Philippines after watching Kirara. She served as our official translator; she will make funny gestures and expressions when conveying the story. It took a while before we learned some basic Tagalog phrases and about six years until I can finally say that I can carry out a normal Tagalog conversation.

Manang Emy's Words to Live By

"Always add 'po' to your sentence. It is a sign of respect,"

"Kasicellphone mo yan"

"Wala ko sabot"

"Pagkayawa naman lang gyud"

"Amaw ka"

Ken Chan: Embracing Imperfections

Ken Chan is getting all the good roles. After making his on-screen debut when he was 18 years of age, He has bagged significant roles in some of the most challenging and risky drama series on Philippine TV. Ken Chan first drew the viewers' interest when he starred in the series Meant to Be as one of the love interests of Billie (Barbie Forteza). However, it wasn't until 2015 when he captured the critics' attention when he played a transgender person in the afternoon drama series Destiny Rose.

Ken Chan's Destiny

Destiny Rose Ken Chan

Ken Chan considers Destiny Rose as his biggest break. Not a lot of actors will be willing to take a role as risky as this. There's a chance that the conservatives will not accept it. As we all know, 90% of Filipinos are Christian, and the church still frowned upon the idea of same-sex marriage. However, enough of that, this is an article that showcases the ingenuity and the acting prowess of Ken Chan. Watching Chan's performance is quite liberating, especially when Destiny confesses to her mother about her sexual orientation. Chan's performance is brave, empathic, authentic, and energizing. You will feel that your heart is pounding, racing, skipping. From his movement to his breath, he commands respect not only for his craft but also for the people he represents. It was natural; it showed his more profound understanding of the role. He wasn't acting; it was a superb portrayal of human characteristics.

Ken Chan: The Special Tatay

Boyet My Special Tatay Ken Chan

After Destiny Rose, Ken Chan took an equally challenging role; Boyet, a father with an intellectual disability. My Special Tatay brought tears and laughter to the Pinoy televiewers for months. It was heart-warming, touching, and gut-wrenching at the same time.  It successfully showcased the person's boundless capacity to love despite his limitations in his cognitive functions and skills. It left a powerful impact not only on the people who are going through the same situation but on everyone. It gave us new perspectives on people with mental disabilities; there will be problems in their disability, but not their capability to love and understand. It's a bitter pill that we all willingly took. Chan dug deep into the character of Boyet; it is not just a set of mannerisms and twitches. You will understand how deeply committed he is to his craft by looking at Boyet's eyes. He allowed us to peek into the beautiful world of autism.

One of the Baes

One of the Baes Ken Chan

After a series of challenging roles, Chan tried to explore his comedic side. Unfortunately, he failed to deliver this time. It was boring, a Richard Yap kind of acting. I just felt that there are too many things that he could've done with his character. It just shows that Chan still has a lot to learn, especially when taking comedic roles. One of the Baes is probably an answer to the clamor of the Rit-Ken fans to see them in a romantic comedy series. It was charming but not funny. It offers good moral values, but not in a powerful manner.

Ang Dalawang Ikaw

Ang Dalawang Ikaw

Known for taking challenging and risky roles, Chan is once again ready to showcase his acting prowess by assuming the role of a person suffering from DID (dissociative identity disorder). The dual characterization would be a perfect opportunity for Chan to showcase his flexibility and resourcefulness as an actor. Chan was successful in breathing life into his two characters, giving them unique nuances and tones. It was effortless. Nonetheless,  we are still uncertain how deep GMA is willing to dive to explore the characters of Nelson and Tyler.

Ken Chan reminds me of Jay Ilagan. His versatility and passion in his craft are something rare, especially for young stars. Without a doubt, Ken Chan is on his way to becoming one of the prime actors in the Philippine entertainment industry.
